Song Analysis #1

"Where is the Love" Black Eyed Peas -2003

The Black Eyed Peas - Where Is The Love? (Official Music Video) - YouTube

This song is really powerful in my opinion. They portray the prominent issues affecting the world; from terrorism, to discrimination to bombing. It also presents the obscure issues individuals face everyday, such as racism, bullying, and greed. The feelings of disappointment, sadness, and exclusion have been familiarized with everyone at one time or another. They use relatable emotions, and also children as examples, and that created an appeal to ethos, and motivates change among people. They believed everyone understood the feeling and hoped it made them realize they shouldn't try to bring it upon others by not creating it but ways to eliminate it.

Comments from listeners agree but feel like the message isn't being heard. They say it's sad it's still going on and that there should be more music that sing about the world and how the damage negativity has impacted generations. There's on going wars with everything and it's somewhat maintained but uncontrollable.

  1. I really love this song, I used to listen to as a kid all the time, along with other Black Eyed Peas music. However, now as an adult, I understand what they're singing about and can comprehend the nuances of the issues that they were speaking out about. I agree that this is powerful piece that brings forward a lot of emotions. An article describes the song as "evergreen" as the piece's commentary on hate and discrimination is as relevant today as it was when it was first released. It is extremely upsetting that so little progress has been made. The Black Eyed Peas also released a remastered version in 2016 in the wake of the Syrian refugee immigration crisis, Black Lives Matter movement, and the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando, FL. You can watch the remastered version here: https://youtu.be/YsRMoWYGLNA
It is interesting how there are people still commenting on the video lamenting how the world hasn't changed, and these issues are still hurting so many people today. It seems like the wounds are still fresh, especially after the last year filled with so much violence and hate surrounding differences in race, political views, ethnic and cultural backgrounds, sexual orientation, gender identity, etc. Here is the link to the article I referred to: https://sosmusicmedia.com/music-that-matters/black-eyed-peas-where-is-the-love
