Katy Perry’s Path to Stardom

Katy Perry is one of the most popular music icons of all time. She is known for her pop culture and outrageous performances. She initially started out as a Christian artist believe it or not. Katy Perry was born Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson was born on October 25, 1984, in Santa Barbara, California.

Raised in a deeply religious family, Perry's first experience of performing was singing in church. A passion for music grew and at the age of 15, Perry began visiting Nashville, gaining experience of song writing and recording demos. She signed to a Christian record label, Red Hill, and recorded an album, under her birth name of Katy Hudson. The album was not a success. At age 17 she moved to Los Angeles and collaborated with producer Glen Ballard, but was not able to secure a lasting record deal. Perry did sign to Columbia Records in 2004, but again this did not prove a success, and she was dropped. Perry also experienced a string of disappointments before getting her big break. She and Ballard were unable to find a record company willing to take them on, and her 2004 collaboration with music producers-turned-performers The Matrix was scrapped shortly before the project was to be released. After having three record deals fall apart, Perry finally signed with Capitol Records in 2007.

Since first emerging into the pop mainstream with her debut smash hit "I Kissed a Girl" in 2008. “Waking Up in Vegas" was the final single from the album One of the Boys. It was co-written by pop music songwriting legend Desmond Child. The song was initially recorded under Katy Perry's ill-fated contract with Columbia Records, and she took it along in her move to Capitol. "California Gurls" debuted at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and soon hit #1. It was the first single released on Capitol Records to reach #1 in only four weeks since Bobbie Gentry's "Ode To Billie Joe" in 1967. "California Gurls" reached #1 at adult pop radio and on the dance chart. It earned a Grammy Award nomination for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals.

Many more songs from this album and a few newer albums led her the opportunity to perform in the superbowl halftime show in 2015 and also a judge in American Idol starting 2017.

I always wondered why Katy Perry decided to go from religious music to worldly music. She realized she was her own person and her parents sheltered her from other forms of music and even politics and Perry felt differently than her parents and created her own voice. She battled emotions and life to figure out what she wanted. She is a strong, independent woman who has inspired many and is still influencing til this day.
