The Little Mermaid

The Little mermaid is an animated movie released in 1989 and is about a 16 year old girl who lives under the sea. She’s a princess with duties and has a life prepared for her. She’s different than her 6 sisters and has a best friend that’s a flounder (voice of reason) and Sebastian a crab (protector) and she collects human objects and becomes fascinated of life beyond the sea. She meets Eric (Lover) and comes to find out he’s a Prince on land and she is guided and shown the ways of human life and falls in love. She ends up running away to be with Eric but is tricked by Ursula (Evil Villain) the sea Witch that uses Ariel and changes everything.

The song “Part of Your World,” is a strong ballad sang by Jodi Benson and being an animated movie, Benson had to somehow connect to Ariel when singing this song. She does a great job expressing Ariel and how she was feeling with her fantasy. Rhyme Line 5-6 “Look at this tove, treasures untold-how many wonders can one cavern hold?” The rhyming gives a sense of beat and rhythm to the song. Alliteration: Line 2/5 “Wouldn’t you think my collection’s complete?/Look at this trove, treasures untold” becomes sort of an ear catcher. Hyperbole: Line 4/8 “The girl who has everything?/ Sure, she’s got everything.” Ariel knows she can’t have everything but still tries. Assonance: Line 24/29 “Up where they stay all day in the sun/ What would I pay to spend a day…” Like alliteration, assonance can be catchy. Consonance: Line 9-10 “I’ve got gadgets and gizmos a plenty/I’ve got whozits and whatzits galore.” Gives an air of youth and delight to the song. The lyrics prove to be beyond just a song for the movie but have a literature meaning.

I really connected to this movie because like Ariel, I felt sheltered and limited to the life I had. I knew there was more out there and I could be and have what I wanted. I love how music is tied into Disney movies especially this one when Ariel has her moments of solos, like you can really empathize how she’s feeling and hope she gets what she wants.
